Eminem has had many great projects over the years, and some are better than others, so the question I’m here to answer today is: which are the best, and which could have been a bit better than they are? I will not be including single tracks like ‘Killshot’ or ‘The Warning’, nor will I be including deluxe or compilation albums, nor will I include albums from D12 or Bad Meets Evil. But with that out of the way, we can get started.
10. Revival: This is the 9th studio album dropped, and it was an interesting drop. It was met with harsh criticism when it dropped, with people disliking the features from mainly pop artists like Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, P!NK, etc. People also disliked the fact that it was super political, taking shots at then-President Trump for issues like police racism, equal rights, etc. For the best song on the album, I would say that it is ‘Arose’. It is a very emotional track talking about the time in 2007 when he had an almost fatal overdose. For the worst song on the album, I would say that it is ‘Remind Me’, since it’s filled with unnecessary toilet humor and just sounds like it came off of Encore, and I mean it in a bad way.
9. The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce): This is the 12th studio album, and it is… a mess. For most, the first half is actually decent, while the second half is just confusing. The project is about the “end of an era” with Slim's death, but later in the album, it implies that he’s somehow still alive. For my favorite track off the album, I would have to go with ‘Antichrist’ because it cleverly targets Gen Z. Then, for the worst track on the album, I would have to go with ‘Road Rage’, it ain’t necessarily bad, but it falls short compared to the rest of the album.
8. Kamikaze: This is the 10th studio album, and this is actually a response to the hate on Revival. Since it was a response, it wouldn't be announced properly like the albums before it. It was dropped on the 30th of August, 2018, as a surprise. For the best track on the album, I would have to say ‘Lucky You’ featuring Joyner Lucas, it has really fast-paced bars and just fast rapping in general, which is really hard to do. For the worst track on the album, I would have to say it is ‘Nice Guy’ featuring Jessie Reyez. It is really unpleasant-sounding, and some of the lyrics are kinda unnecessarily annoying and just straight-up bad.
7. The Marshall Mathers LP 2: This was the 8th studio album that he has dropped, and as the name suggests, it is a sequel album to his 3rd studio album, ‘The Marshall Mathers LP’. This album featured more rock- and rap-influenced music, especially with producers like Rick Rubin. For the best track on the album, I’d have to go with ‘Rap God’ since it’s basically known as one of his fastest songs, while also being filled with rhymes and good punchlines. For the worst track on the album, I would have to go with ‘Stronger Than I Was’ since it’s just another one of his songs where he’s trying too hard on the singing part.
6. The Slim Shady LP: This is his 2nd studio album and his entrance into the industry after being signed by Dr. Dre. The production and lyrics on this album are amazing. No wonder everyone wanted him to keep dropping albums. For the best track on the album, I would have to say that it is ‘My Name Is’ since it is the track that jump-started his career. For the worst track on the album, I would have to say it is ‘As The World Turns’ since it ain’t really a trash song, but just not as good compared to the rest of the tracks on the album.
5. Music To Be Murdered By (Side A & B): This is his 11th studio album, and let’s say it was a great one, to say the least. He finally got back with Dr. Dre for production on the album. For Side A, the best track would be ‘Unaccommodating’ featuring Young M.A., since the feature is actually decent and the fast-paced bars are really fire. The worst track on Side A is ‘In Too Deep’ because its vocals are really annoying, but at least the chorus is actually pretty decent. For Side B, the best track is ‘Zeus’ featuring White Gold, since he rapped about the state of rap in 2020 and even dissed Snoop. For the worst track on Side B, I would have to say it is ‘Guns Blazing’ featuring Dr. Dre & Sly Pyper; it really felt rushed compared to the rest of the tracks.
4. Recovery: This was his 7th studio album, and it has a really different sound compared to most of the albums he made before it, besides maybe Infinite. It is more of a pop-rap album, featuring artists like Rihanna and P!NK. For the best song on the album, I’d have to give it to ‘Cold Wind Blows’ since it differs from the pop sound of the album and is more hardcore rap like he always makes. For the worst track on the album, I’d have to go with ‘W.T.P.’ since it is just mediocre compared to the rest of the songs that are on the record.
3. The Eminem Show: Being his 4th studio album, this is literally an album that will go in the history books. It sold just under 3 million copies in under a month, which is crazy to think about in retrospect. It literally topped the charts in almost every country, but then again, most Eminem albums do. For the best track on the album, I would have to go with ‘Sing For The Moment’, the sampling in this song is incredible, and so is the lyricism. For the worst song on the album, it has to be ‘Drips’ since it is a little too goofy and just doesn’t match the rest of the album.
2. Relapse: This is his 5th studio album, and it’s definitely different, but in a good way, in my opinion. This album has a lot more horrorcore than his previous work. But there are songs that break that cycle like my favorite track from it ‘Beautiful’, which is basically reflecting on him becoming sober after his 2007 overdose. This track alone is loved by many Stans alike and for good reason. For the worst track on the album, I’d have to say ‘Hello’ because it is too goofy and doesn’t really match the energy of the horrorcore tracks on the album.
1. The Marshall Mathers LP: This is his 3rd studio album and, in my opinion, his best one. This album has been considered a hip-hop classic by many and is one of the reasons that Eminem got where he is today. For the best track on the album, I’d have to say it’s ‘The Way I Am’ since it addresses his critics and the expectations that the industry has for him, and he talks about how much he hates the judgment he gets from it. For the worst track off the record, I have to give it to ‘Kim’ since the song is literally about murdering his wife.
So that is my ranking on the discography. If you disagree with my rankings, please leave me a hateful comment so I can ignore you. But that is the ranking that I personally agree with. If y’all like this section, I might do this with more artists in the future.
