On Veterans’ Day veterans and their families gathered at Casey County Middle School. The assembly had allowed Makerspace students led by Media Coordinator Tammy Spears to present Quilts of Valor after reading their stories.
According to oqvf.org, the Quilt of Valor Foundation’s website. “A Quilt of Valor® (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war. The Quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”
This year, the 300th Quilt of Valor was awarded to Raymond Sears by SEW Casey. This quilt featured the log cabin block pattern — the Foundation’s pattern of the year.
Guest speaker David Goode, of the Casey County Honor Guard, helped celebrate the occasion and emphasized the veterans’ significance.
Veterans appeared honored, and our school was privileged to host these heroes. Presenting handmade quilts was a true gesture of gratitude. As a community, we cherish their sacrifices and are committed to honoring them each year.
"SEW Casey Under Our Wings students make and award quilts through library classes offered at Casey County Middle School. This ongoing project fulfills numerous KY Library [Curriculum] Standards, including creating exhibits, writing, participating in a national organization, and speaking to an audience beyond the classroom. SEW Casey has volunteers that are always helping make and award Quilts of Valor,” says Tammy Spears.
Each Quilt of Valor is made by students and awarded to veterans, along with a certificate. This year’s recipients included Jason Lucas, Harold Cochran, Jonathan Mate, Tony Lawson, Leonard Owsiany, Lewis Foster, Ryan Wilson, Preston Henson Jr., Josh Hampton, William Barnes Jr., Nichole Morrow, Raymond Sears, Mark Oswalt, Hailey Williams, Mike Humphrey, and James Troxell.
